Experience matters.

In my 15+ years of teaching, I have taught every level of student, from beginner through advanced, on all wind instruments, percussion, guitar and piano.

Whether you want to sit first chair in your school band, to play on stage with a successful rock band, or simply be able to enjoy music on your own, I can help you chart the course to musical success.

MY GUIDING MUSIC TEACHING PRINCIPLES

1. Music is fundamental to the human experience.

Participating in music is not an experience reserved for the elite few; instead, it is something that everyone can enjoy in their own way.

2. Success in music looks different for everyone.

I work with you to pinpoint what success in music looks like for you, then together we form a plan to help you achieve that vision.

3. We enjoy what we are good at.

We feel the most rewarding feelings when we achieve what psychologists call a “flow” state, also known as being “in the zone” or “locked in”.

If too much challenge is presented based on your current skill, you feel anxious; if too little challenge is presented, you become bored with the task.

I help you achieve “flow” by presenting you with challenges that match your current skill set, while encouraging you to explore new skills and push your boundaries.

4. Proper lesson pacing keeps you motivated to succeed.

Think of the best teachers, coaches or managers you have ever had. It is likely that they challenged you beyond what you thought you could do, yet gave you a good road map to help you successfully navigate new challenges.

I can show you where your music can go. I pace your learning so that you feel comfortably challenged each lesson.

5. Motivation comes from hearing your own musical progress.

We can all think of a time when we learned the basics of a skill, but then our learning “stalled out” after the initial excitement of learning the basics.

I help you not only to learn the basics of playing an instrument, but I also guide you through the phases of improvement that happen afterwards to keep you motivated and enjoying playing your instrument.
